Beijing Local Route: South-to-North Water Diversion Project, September 27, 2024
>

Tuanchenghu Regulating Reservoir

The Tuanchenghu Regulating Reservoir is situated to the south of the Summer Palace in Beijing. It is a key facility for the Beijing section of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, which is the largest water diversion project in the world and designed to alleviate water shortages in Northern China.

Digital Twin South-to-North Water Diversion Project

The Digital Twin South-to-North Water Diversion Project utilizes digital twin technology to digitally represent the entire infrastructure, integrating real-time monitoring data for holistic operational visibility. Offering the four preemptive functions (forecasting, early warning, scenario rehearsal, contingency planning), it ensures safe, efficient water supply through intelligent resource allocation, design optimization, and cross-departmental collaboration via shared real-time info. It enhances public participation and regulatory oversight, setting a standard for modern water project management in China.

Mutianyu Great Wall

Mutianyu Great Wall has a long history and a splendid culture. Located 70 kilometers away from the center of Beijing, it is one of the famous sections of the Great Wall in Beijing and represents the essence of the Ming Dynasty's Great Wall. The construction of Mutianyu Great Wall has a unique style. For instance, Zhengguan Pass with three watchtowers standing together to form a central watchtower, is rare among the Great Wall sections. To the northwest, there are famous Great Wall landscapes known as Jiankou, Niu Ji Jiao Bian, and Eagle Flying Upside Down. The terrain is steep and rugged, with continuous undulations, resembling a soaring dragon. In spring, the mountain is covered with beautiful flowers; in summer, it is lush and accompanied by the sound of flowing water; in autumn, the mountains are adorned with red leaves and abundant fruits; and in winter, it is covered in white snow, presenting a picturesque northern scenery. Mutianyu Great Wall is renowned both domestically and internationally and is praised as an outstanding section of the Great Wall.

Yellow River Route: Beijing – Zhengzhou – Luoyang, September 27-28, 2024

Yellow River Museum

The Yellow River Museum, located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China, is a microcosm of the Yellow River, known as the "Mother River of China," and serves as a treasure trove of knowledge about this iconic waterway. Through the use of images, videos, charts, engineering models, and physical specimens, the museum showcases and introduces to visitors the geographical features, landscape, climate, and natural characteristics of the Yellow River, which is considered the cradle of the Chinese nation. It also highlights the Yellow River culture that has evolved through human activities, as well as information on water and drought disasters, river management, water resource development, and future plans for the Yellow River.

Yellow River Standardized Embankment and Yellow River Ecological Corridor

The standardized embankment construction includes multiple engineering projects such as sediment deposition for embankment stabilization, widening of embankments, rehabilitation of hazardous structures, hardening of embankment tops, establishment of wave-breaking forests, and planting of trees. Specifically, a 50-meter-wide wave-breaking forest is planted along the riverbank, the embankment top is widened to 12 meters and fully hardened, serving both flood defense and emergency transport purposes as well as regional transportation needs. On the landward side, a 100-meter sediment deposition zone is created, with its elevation matching the design flood level of the year 2000, preventing seepage and ensuring safety during flood periods. Planting ecological forests in sediment deposition areas and on embankments helps block sand and wind disturbances from the Yellow River floodplains on residents in the surrounding areas.

The Yellow River Ecological Corridor focuses on the restoration and protection of the natural ecosystems along the Yellow River. This initiative aims to create a contiguous corridor of well-preserved habitat along the river, allowing for the conservation of biodiversity, enhancement of water quality, and promotion of sustainable development practices. By establishing green spaces, wetlands, and natural habitats along the riverbanks, the Yellow River Ecological Corridor helps to mitigate environmental degradation and promote a harmonious relationship between human activities and the river ecosystem.

Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project

Located about 40 km to the north of Luoyang City in Central China’s Henan Province, Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project (dam top elevation 281 m, reservoir storage capacity 12.65 billion m3) on the Yellow River has six 300 MW turbines with a total installed capacity of 1,800 MW. The Xiaolangdi Project has made significant contributions to the sustainable development and management of the Yellow River, addressing key challenges such as flooding, sedimentation, water quality, and energy generation.

A pioneering application and flagship pilot of digital twin technology in water infrastructure in China, Digital Twin Xiaolangdi integrates advanced data processing and simulation for enhanced efficiency, safety, and environmental management. The Digital Application processes multi-source data for real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision-making. It enables four preemptive functions (forecasting, early warning, scenario rehearsal, contingency planning) for enhanced flood control and dam safety. Advanced algorithms provide insights for resource management and disaster response.

Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes, located on both sides of the Yi River to the south of the ancient capital of Luoyang, Henan province, comprise more than 2,300 caves and niches carved into the steep limestone cliffs over a 1km long stretch. These contain almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, more than 60 stupas and 2,800 inscriptions carved on steles. The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). The two sculptural art styles, the earlier “Central China Style” and the later “Great Tang Style” had great influence within the country and throughout the world, and have made important contributions to the development of the sculptural arts in other Asian countries.

Three Gorges Project

The Three Gorges Project is a pillar project for the management, development, and conservation of the Yangtze River. It stands as the world’s largest water conservancy project, as well as the hydropower project with the most comprehensive benefits. The Three Gorges Project has maximized its potential by offering comprehensive advantages in flood control, power generation, navigation and water resource utilization. Its construction and operation have fundamentally transformed the flood control situation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The consistent production of clean electricity has played an indispensable role in establishing a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system. promoting China’s green electricity production and eco-environmental protection. In 2003, the first batch of units was connected to the grid, with a total installed capacity of 22.5 GW.
